SimplePractice alternatives for solo therapists, compared

If you run a solo therapy practice and are weighing SimplePractice against the alternatives, price is only part of the decision. What matters is what each plan includes for the way you work. This comparison uses each company's own pricing pages, checked on September 24, 2026, and says where each one fits.

Prices change, and most of these companies run promotions, so confirm on each pricing page before you decide. Payment processing fees are usually charged separately, so check them too.
What to compare besides price
- How you get paid. If you bill insurance panels directly, you need electronic claim filing. SimplePractice and TherapyNotes are established for that, and Sessions Health charges per claim. RafaNest does not file claims to insurers yet. It creates superbills that clients submit for out-of-network reimbursement.
- What is included and what is an add-on. Telehealth, AI notes and reminders are included in some plans and priced separately in others. Add up the features you will really use.
- Client limits. Free plans have caps. Sessions Health's free plan covers up to 3 clients, and RafaNest's Starter plan covers up to 25 active patients. Jane's Balance plan is limited to 20 appointments a month.
- Your records. Ask how to export them if you leave, and whether the vendor signs a Business Associate Agreement. See our HIPAA questions for vendors.
- Track record. SimplePractice and TherapyNotes have been around much longer than RafaNest, and have larger user communities.
Where each one tends to fit
- Insurance-heavy solo practice. TherapyNotes and SimplePractice, because claim filing is central to them.
- Budget and a small caseload. Sessions Health's free plan and RafaNest's Starter plan let you start without a monthly bill.
- Booking and charting for a small caseload. Jane's Balance plan covers up to 20 appointments a month, and insurance billing is an add-on on its higher plans.
- Cash-pay or out-of-network, with video and AI notes. RafaNest bundles them at a single price, and its Professional plan includes Good Faith Estimates for self-pay clients.
Tools built for cash-pay practices
A newer group of tools is aimed at therapists who do not bill insurance panels. They tend to be cheaper, and they differ in what they leave out. Here is what each one's own page says.

RafaNest sits in this group on price, with a free Starter plan and $29 a month for Professional. Its Professional plan lists Good Faith Estimates, a branded website with online booking and an AI booking assistant, along with telehealth, card payments and superbills. None of these features is unique on its own. SimplePractice, Sessions Health and Jane document a Good Faith Estimate form or tool, Practicepicnic lists Good Faith Estimates in its plan, CoralEHR offers a free estimate generator, and SimplePractice and Jane offer websites, with Jane's as a paid add-on. The one feature we did not find on the other tools' pages is an AI assistant that answers client questions and books the appointment for them, which RafaNest includes from the free plan. Jane says on its site that its AI receptionist is still in development, and the AI in SimplePractice (Note Taker and Care Aide) is built for clinicians, for notes and session preparation. We also read the AI pages of TherapyNotes, Sessions Health, CoralEHR, Upheal and Practicepicnic. Their AI is for clinician documentation and admin, and Upheal's assistant drafts actions for the clinician to approve. What RafaNest offers is that combination at these prices, so compare the exact features you need on each page before you decide.
